DEFINITIONS

The definition of the terms, hustle culture and studygram.

Hustle Culture

The idea of hustle culture stems from society’s beliefs that success directly correlates to productivity. Individuals promise themselves that being in a consistently preoccupied state will yield a prosperous, happy future. However, this will not always be the case. Hustle culture instills guilt when we feel we are not productive enough. Unfortunately, keeping up with busy schedules and ignoring the need for breaks leads to burnout and often forces us to neglect our physical and mental well-being. In addition, imposter syndrome develops when we believe we must strive for perfection. This syndrome produces self-inflicted criticism and impacts our perception of self-worth and self-esteem. Thus, when social media promotes hustle culture through its perfect persona, users feel flawed for their inability to keep up with unsustainable trends and expectations. For example, studygrams promote the image of a perfectly polished, productive student. Hence, this establishes the standard for the tier of productivity we require to be perceived as successful.

Studygram

A term derived from combining the words, study and Instagram. Studygrams are accounts influencers manage intending to share motivational study content via social media, specifically Instagram. Common posts shared on studygrams include organized notes, quotes, and study videos.
