DEFINITION
The definition and consequences of the model minority.
Model Minority
The “model minority” is an idea originating from stereotypes commonly associated with the Asian American community. People of Asian descent are painted as successful and academically driven individuals who possess high socioeconomic status in society. Although the stereotypes seem to highlight Asians in a positive way, there are many consequences. The model minority causes immense stress and pressure because of the high standards children are expected to uphold in their academics, society, and communities.
Additionally, the racism against the Asian community is often erased as the stereotypes downplay the prejudice they face because they are perceived to have an elevated status among other people of colour. Therefore, a hierarchy forms where the Asian community is perceived to be the best minority. Hence, the label attached to most Asians: the model minority. Ultimately, the idea of a model minority divides people of colour and pits minoritized groups against each other and prevents us from working together to fight against the racism and oppression people of colour face as a whole.

“Never look down on yourself when the whole world turns against you, just look in the mirror then you’ll find out that you’re not alone. That person you see in the mirror is your reflection, it shows that even if everybody ignores you it will always stick around with you.”
